Releasing the fibrous ring

Tuberous breast
What it is
The tuberous breast (also tubular or constricted) is a development anomaly that shows at puberty: an internal fibrous ring constricts the gland and stops the breast expanding harmoniously. The typical result: a narrow base, a short or missing lower pole, a high fold and areolas that herniate outwards.
Said plainly: it is not a small breast — it is a breast that could not develop its shape. A standard augmentation does not fix it (the implant would push against the same constriction); it takes a specific operation that first releases the ring and then rebuilds the shape.
The technique
The heart of the surgery: breaking the internal ‘corset’ constricting the gland. Once released, the tissue finally expands — and the tubular shape does not return.
Mild grades may need only an inframammary route; with areolar herniation, a periareolar approach reshapes the areola-nipple complex.
Chosen after measuring base and distances: on a narrow base, implant shape matters more than in any other augmentation.
Water-assisted harvesting and vibration expansion fill the missing lower pole with your own fat, soften edges — or even correct without an implant in selected cases.
Before surgery
Your consultation starts with a thorough assessment of your anatomy and goals, followed by a photographic study used to plan the procedure and compare your results later on.
Practical points for every breast surgery: arrive at a stable weight, with breastfeeding finished months ago if applicable; have your medication reviewed (blood thinners are usually paused beforehand, with your doctor); and stop smoking. When age or history indicates it, a breast imaging study is completed first.
Specific here: correction happens once development is complete, usually from age 18, for a stable result. The intervention includes 24-hour hospitalisation under medical watch: the initial tissue expansion deserves expert control.
The pre-operative tests and the anaesthesia assessment are completed at Quirónsalud Málaga Hospital.
Recovery
Similar to a breast augmentation, with one particularity: the released tissue keeps expanding and shaping for months.
Hospital stay under medical surveillance at Quirónsalud Málaga: the initial expansion is closely monitored.
Discomfort under control, post-op bra on, quiet life. Check-ups follow the areola and the new lower pole.
Back to routine; progressive exercise when cleared at review.
The released tissue has expanded into its rounded, definitive shape. With the right technique, the tubular form does not come back.
Scars
Mild grades approached through the fold hide the scar under the breast. When the areola-nipple complex is reshaped, the scar is periareolar — around the areola, where colour and texture change conceal it. Pink at first, discreet with time.
Surgical honesty
Placing an implant without releasing the ring deforms the breast further (the feared double bubble). Correction demands specific technique and experience.
With the ring properly sectioned, tissue heals in its new rounded position and the constriction does not rebuild.
Though visible at puberty, surgery waits for complete development (≈18) so the result is stable.
In selected cases, fat-only lipofilling rounds the breast with no foreign body — a more moderate but fully natural augmentation.
Patient information
Every surgery carries risks and this one is no exception. You will go through them in detail during your consultation and in writing in the informed-consent form; this is the honest summary.
Expected — not a complication
Uncommon
Experience matters here more than in any augmentation: tuberous breast is complex breast surgery. Ask your surgeon how many they have corrected.

Price
A closed quote with no surprises: medical fees, high-quality implants when used, 24-hour hospitalisation, operating room, anaesthesia, pre-op tests, periodic visits, aftercare and every follow-up. Tuberosity grade, one or both breasts, and the volume route set the figure.
About cheap offers. You will see plenty. Our honest advice: research and choose your surgeon first, and only then compare prices — never the other way round.
FAQS
No. It is a shape anomaly, not a size one: an internal fibrous ring prevents harmonious expansion. That is why standard augmentation fails and the constriction must be released first.
Not with the right technique: once the fibrous ring is properly sectioned, tissue heals in its rounded position and the tubular shape does not rebuild.
Very common. A personalised asymmetric plan corrects the tuberous side and adjusts the healthy one so both match in volume, height and shape.
The anaesthetic protocol is decided at your consultation, with the assessment of the anaesthesia team at Quirónsalud Málaga Hospital as part of the pre-operative workup.
