Secondary breast surgery
Why it happens
Implants and results age: a prosthesis can displace, rotate or ripple; the capsule around it can harden (contracture) causing pain or deformity; an implant can rupture; or a result that once satisfied simply evolved badly with time, weight and gravity.
Secondary surgery is the discipline that corrects all of it — and it is more demanding than the first operation: scarred tissue, altered anatomy and a patient who has already been disappointed once. Experience here is not a plus; it is the requirement.

Total capsulectomy — removing the hardened capsule entirely, not just the implant — leaving clean, healthy tissue.

Before surgery
Your consultation starts with a thorough assessment of your anatomy and goals, followed by a photographic study used to plan the procedure and compare your results later on.
Practical points for every breast surgery: arrive at a stable weight, with breastfeeding finished months ago if applicable; have your medication reviewed (blood thinners are usually paused beforehand, with your doctor); and stop smoking. When age or history indicates it, a breast imaging study is completed first.

A confirmed rupture is an indication for surgery, but in most cases it is planned calmly: the priority is doing it well — total capsulectomy and a clear plan for the resulting shape.
Partially, yes: lipofilling can restore some volume with your own tissue after removal — more discreet than a prosthesis, completely natural and permanent.
It is more demanding technically — scarred tissue and altered anatomy — which is why experience in secondary surgery matters. In expert hands, recovery is often gentler than the first time.
